Harlots - even less street-smarts than a sense of humour
Tried watching a new Tv show "Harlots", but didn't like it. Normally it'd be right up my alley: poverty, whores, costumes, drama, strong women roles, screwing, ambition and intrigue ... Alas, this is such depressing shit, such 'girls having problem with boys', 'women being nasty to one another' and 'at the end we are all victims of society', it just completely turned me off. After the first ten minutes, which I'm keeping because they were adorable, it's just misery and bullshit. I like my whores as I like my soldiers - if you're gonna be in the biz, have some adventures for fuck's sakes. Not every fuck's a rape. All of these women act like they've just been sold to slavery this last week. ZERO sexy. It starts off on a cute enough note, but soon become Spartacus for housewives. And I don't know what happened to Samantha Morton, but the is holding back so awfully she's hard to watch. Like she's ashamed of having gotten old or something. She could be wild and she's not, she a tame dandelion weed on the sidewalk of the gutters. Even her glorious older daughter soon becomes a depressing, emotional victim no amount of horrid make-up can save.
I'm gonna go watch Sakuran to wash the bad taste away. That at least is a neat film about the exact same subject.

Wisterias - and enough with the vegan photography
I had such a cute moment yesterday - I took 20 bucks from G's wallet while he was sleeping (in case this sounds strange - I am not allowed to have any cash on me, because ... you'll see what happens if I have even 3 bucks in my pocket..), offed to have coffee with dad who was in town, but dad gave me some change to pay for coffee, as he's another one of those who only allow a lady to pay if he's given them the money first (old school), so I still had 20 bucks intact AND JUST enough change to walk 4 miles to buy two packs of hobby buttons - one of two things I am addicted to, chocolate and buttons, then walked home with a few coins still left, about two euro, which I gave while crossing the street to the one bum i like - a man whose spirit has long vacated the premises, a very dirty, mumbling, very thin man who walks around the world talking to himself, pushing a black bike. He never rides it, he just pushes it and it's a miracle he's still alive (*don't jinx*), as sometimes he uses poor shoulders of country roads...
.... And on the next crossing I found ten bucks lying on the ground ... So at the end of the crazy morning, I was able to sneak 30 bucks back into G's wallet AND secretly spend an hour sorting the colorful buttons in jars until he woke up :D
I'm off to help dad in the vineyard now; G is still a bit off his game, still mostly sleeping. Am taking the ten bucks to buy us some vegan sandwiches I tried the other day, they are actually really juicy.
And here are some dramatic wisterias. Now enough with the vegan photography.

This poster has me interested, although I doubt
I'll enjoy the story, even of it's dystopian critical value - I cannot abide American politics screaming end of the
world like they've EVER actually seen what a dictatorship looks like; I cannot
abide Christian fundamentalists or finding strength in being a fanatic and
hoping some fakey spook in the sky will save you - or damn you, whichever his
dick swings when it suits him - and I don't really watch things with Joseph
Fiennes in them. It took me a little while to figure out why in ‘Silence’
expressing apotheoses is a big deal when someone is torturing you: it’s because
in Christian circles you’re SUPPOSED to suffer start to finish. Well, fuck that
at daily double.
They're setting the whole thing up like being a
concubine is the worst thing ever. Here we have a good example of people
knowing a squeaking nothing about history or other cultures. There was a time
when being a priestess or being a concubine was the best thing that could
possibly happen to a pretty, healthy girl. Same as being a priest or a soldier
was the best that could happen to a boy: food came every day, you had a place
to sleep, bathrooms, you had respect and protection, you belonged to something
and once in a while you saw some action.
Compared to the alternative - be a farmer or
starve (or be a politician until a rival kills you) - these things were not
considered the worse thing ever. But of course for an American
"freedom", "sexual purity" and "political backfire"
is the worst ever. You better pray.
Plus I fucking hate victimhood. People screaming
'no, please don't, please don't!..' You are an apex predator species for fuck's
sakes. Where are you fangs?
.. Off to the library to check it out now.

Ah, the General is gravely ill. We’re treating
him for Ebola, salmonella, legionella and septic shock. Sure, the doctors say
you should just rest for the three days until the cold passes, but what do they
know.

Cartesian mind/body problem
MyMaja
and I got into a philosophical debate, following the viewing of the movie
yesterday. It started with Theseus' ship – the paradox which questions if all
the parts of a ship are gradually replaced, is it still the same ship and if
yes, then what if someone collected all the discarded pieces and built them
back into the ship? Which one then is the true Theseus’s ship?
What
happens when a heart is transplanted? You are no longer the same person,
surely, and it can freak some people out (though not so much so with other body
parts such as lung or kidney, as we do not have such a dramatic communication
with kidneys as we do with hearts.) but how much of you must be replaced before
‘you’ comes into question? And what the answers then should be?
A long
time ago I had such a weird moment of discomfort when I was told I must change
all of my documents upon my first marriage, as a name has been added to my own
and the woman at the counter at the magistrate said: this person no longer
exists.
Fuck
you, lady.
Then
there is the matter of the brain. If you ask the brain, it is the only thing
that makes you you – every other part
you can lose or replace, but within the brain lies your true spirit … Well. No.
There is more to the personality than the brain. For starters, there are
hormones. Yes, it doesn't WORK without the brain, but whenever I see my husband
naked, my cunt starts to water like a hungry dog. It does that completely on its
own. I could probably MAKE it, using only thought, or PREVENT it from, using
thoughts to distract myself, but the cunt has a life completely of its own. I
can switch my brain off when we're banging, and the cunt has a jolly good time
being simply a cunt. The brain can imagine A LOT. But that’s a consolation
price.
What
happens when someone transplants an arm or a hand? Does that hand gradually
communicate with the blood enough to get freckles, to get the skin tone and the
texture and the hair similar to the rest of me?
The fact
is the General is a much better person than me – if his life depended on it, I
would give him my heart in a … heartbeat. Then he’d be him with my heart in it.
Can you picture it? I can picture all the things that could go wrong, but above
that, I can see someone with his sense and my passion. :D And cannot find a
better reason to die.
That said,
should the day arrive anyone can get transplants and upgrades and additions, I
will be the crazy old lady promoting purity of the body, waiting for the day
when I have to save everyone who’s been hacked. I don’t even like new cars. My car
is half my age and I’m half an old lady already.
General's line of the week
“I was
sitting in on a meeting today and the higher ups were having a go at one
another, again. The chairman was especially rude towards a missing member and a
mate remarked the use of such adjectives, especially towards someone who isn’t
present, is unseemly. The chairman then replied: fine, I’ll use different adjectives
– are we hunters or are we firemen?...
And I’m
sitting there, thinking … Those aren’t
adjectives.
Fuuuuuck.
I’m turning into Kay!!?”

"What a beauty you are..."
Spoilers, bitches.
Looks like the higher the Rotten Tomatoes score
of an American movie lately, the less I like it. Doctor Strange and John Wick
2 were both in the 90s and they were terrible. No idea what the critics are
thinking. But Ghost in The Shell was
badly reviewed all across the board, even by Jeremy, so I guess my expectations
were extremely low going in. Still I ended up truly liking it. I liked it for
all the right reasons – stuff that, it seems, critics no longer bother to
comprehend or even appreciate. I doubt they as much as bothered to look into
the lore of this adaptation. No matter. As Asia Argento would put it, when her
own directorial debut was torn to bits: these are the people who think Shakespeare in Love is a great movie.
First
the bad stuff. The story/script was weak as fuck and the voiceover in the end
was cringe-worthy. Like they screened it for a bunch of random viewers and they
were like ‘whaaa? I didn’t get it!’ and the studio said: Okay, dumb it down
80%.
Now
for the stuff I liked.
I
was truly worried what they’re going to make of the villain(s), since in the
original, the PRESENCE of the villain is monumental, whereas physically he
never truly manifests, especially not as a tormented hottie who looks like an
offspring of Ultron and a derelict billboard underwear model. They went for two
– The Puppet Master and corporations, and they did it rather well half the time,
all things considered. Though the former’s motives were paltry and petty and
personal (and he can't shoot for shit), brushed away by his aggressive temperament, and highlighted by the
splendid visuals, he was ultimately just a crooked cog in the wheels of
ambitious money-makers. The corporate asshole hardly compared and was
unfortunately too cardboard-cut to be believable. In a sense he was cut of the
same cloth as Sephiroth: designed to be a super soldier for a private
organisation under government contract, but psychologically unstable.
The
role of Major was well supported by a lot of nice roles around her – the brotherly
role of Batou, a man three times her size, smart and calm; the father figure
boss played by an old but ever awesome Kitano; the mother figure scientist,
played by Binoche, and Motoko’s actual biological mother, played very briefly
but extremely memorably by the amazing Kaori Momoi. The role of Kuze, played by
Pitt, whom I never particularly cared much (maybe in The Dreamers, MAYBE), whom
I am SO writing a fuck fiction as soon as I am done with this review, was well enough
written, well played, well stripped and well lit – the way he comes in and out
of the shadows was the best bit about his performance. You can really tell they
spent a lot of effort on some bits and others, nah, not so much. The end fight?
Not so much.
Both of the two robots have such a
cool mating dance going on, which I could watch for two hours longer. (You can
tell with the editing they cut out A LOT.) The way they talk, hug, have a past,
have a future, the way they kept standing so deliciously close, as if personal
space was entirely unknown to them, as if they want to kiss but can’t remember
what kissing is for, or as a childish sense of gravity towards one another.
Even as they are dying, he crawls up to her to be close, although they could
perfectly easily communicate via the network. In a sense he is physically closer
to her than other ‘normals’ are allowed to come.
It makes me wonder how designed was
she: they seemed to need to breathe, but they could not feel, at least not
pain. Did they feel touch, pleasure? Could they GIVE pleasure? Were their
genitals included, were there nerves connected to their brains that would
enable them sexual gratification at all, just for the fun of it? Like with all
robots, the brain was in the head and not the chest, and all the time Major is
reminded she can be and act and be perceived as human, if she wants to, but she
very rarely bothers to. Half the time she is so resentful of her condition she
takes unnecessary chances.
As
for the eye candy Ms. Johansson, I do appreciate her effort to do some acting
for a change, at least to step away from her usual routine when her tremendous
looks and her deep voice do most of the acting for her. I love the way she
walks and stands in this movie – she walks like she’s retarded and she stands
leaning forth as if she was constantly thinking: is this what I’m seeing what I
am supposed to see or do others see something totally different and I’m being
weird?
I
thought her blend of a human girl vagrant-activist runaway and the perfect machine
body was surprisingly well played out. Especially in her scenes with ‘Hideo’
(Is that how that name is pronounced? Hee-deYOUh? I thought it was ‘Hiddy’o’. As
if in ‘hideous’. Ah.) and her true mom. Though the scene with the hooker is
kind of sweet, also. How many go for human contact, I wonder. With a prostitute
who considers her human body to be a disadvantage in the biz.
And
then there’s the world-building. HOLY. SHIT. How I wish to live to see it. All
of the Neuromancer, Blade Runner, Black Mirror, Immortel Ad Vitam and the
original manga shown insofar come to surface here. It’s fantastic. I loved that
world. I hope to live to see it, though of course I would neither allow the
General to ever have an implant or use one myself, I’d probably be an activist
myself. Certainly gotsta borrow from such world more. I’m sure I can come up
with a scene in Goose where a world like that would be acceptable.
And steal the villain.
PS I
have to find one of my old wigs and cut it into this mess Major pulls off. I
would so care to have a haircut like this, though unfortunately I do not have
the face for fringe.
PPS LOL.
Found it. The black one was borrowed to someone for Hallowe’en the last time and
a large plastic spider was still clipped in. As I was brushing the wig out, I
left the spider on the washing machine. Nearly killed the teenager. I forget
that normal people are not afraid of abstract existential inconsistencies as
they are of a minute insect.
